Description

Visiting an unknown city is a pretty big issue for some people, so you have to imagine how it would be like to be on an alien planet. Not just any planet either, but one that is or was populated by an intelligence species, which means that it contains alien constructions, most probably covered in their language as well.

Investigate a foreign planet and solve its riddles

Xenotep is a minimalistic adventure game with point & click mechanics in which your task is to figure out how to interact with alien technology. In fact, the whole thing feels a bit like in the Myst series, although it’s not quite like that. Even so, every point & click fan should find it easy to get familiar with the gameplay mechanics and start moving around from puzzle to puzzle.
There’s not much of a plot to follow, given the fact that you start by descending from a spaceship on an alien planet. After that, you can do anything you wish, which includes moving from one area to the other, or tackling the puzzles as you see fit. Naturally, they are usually connected, so it’s not as simple as it sounds in theory.

Simple controls and basic pixel graphics

Since you only have to use your mouse in order to control the character and interact with the objects you come across, it should be fairly easy to start working on the puzzles. On the other hand, you have to figure out what every symbol means and how they all work together, which is a lot more challenging than it appears. In fact, it might take you a long time understanding how to approach each puzzle.
In the visual department, everything is designed to look as basic as possible, which means that the game uses 2D pixel graphics. They look decent, but you can only move on a single axis, which kind of retrains your options. Even so, you should be able to forget about all this by simply concentrating on the riddles and the hidden meaning underneath it all.

A neat challenge for adventure fans

In the end, Xenotep may not be the most appealing game out there, but it should be a lot of fun if you enjoy solving puzzles. Moreover, it’s short enough not to become a bother after a while.
