Shutdown Timer Description
Shutdown Timer is a Java-based application that gives you the possibility to schedule the computer to power off or reboot on countdown. It doesn't include complicated options or configuration settings, making it accessible to all types of users, even those inexperienced with such software.
Setup and GUI
Installing this tool takes minimal time and effort. However, worth noting is that you must have Java in order to launch it.
When it comes to the interface, Shutdown Timer adopts a simple window with a clear-cut structure, displaying all options available.
Power off or restart the PC on countdown
In order to set a countdown timer, all you have to do is move three sliders corresponding to the hour, minute and second. You can check out the actual time on the top part of the frame (24-hour clock format), as well as select the power options between shutdown and restart.
The status bar shows the operating system, name of logged on user, and current time. It's possible to pause and resume the task, as well as to cancel it. There are no other notable options provided by this piece of kit.
Evaluation and observations
Although it hasn't been updated for a long time, we haven't come across any compatibility issues on newer Windows in our tests. The app didn't hang, crash or prompt error messages.
On the hand, it comes packed with just a handful of options and doesn't make room for customization. For example, it doesn't have additional power management actions (e.g. log off, hibernate), and doesn't give you the possibility to set a sharp time as the trigger. Moreover, it doesn't integrate options for creating multiple profiles with different schedule configurations.
Conclusion
Taking everything into account, Shutdown Timer offers a fast and simple method for setting the PC to shut down or restart on any countdown you define.
