Wake on LAN Description
Wake on LAN is a simple-to-use piece of software that gives you the possibility to send packets to the specified MAC address of a computer in your local network, in order to turn it on.
However, this is a successful task only if the Wake-On-LAN (WOL) feature has been previously enabled on the remote machine from its BIOS. The program comes packed with the necessary and suffice options for getting the job done quickly.
Simple interface for sending WOL packets
The GUI is plain and simple, made from a single window with a rudimentary look, which contains text boxes for entering the alphanumerical MAC address of the target computer.
The packet is sent after confirming the action with one click, after which the tool shows a message on the screen, informing you that the task was carried out successfully. There are no other noteworthy options available.
No setup required, besides .NET Framework
There is no installation involved. However, Wake on LAN is not entirely portable, since it needs .NET Framework. Otherwise, it won't run. The program files can be saved in a preferred directory on the disk or copied to a removable storage unit, in order to directly run it on any PC, as long as it has Microsoft's platform installed.
It doesn't add new entries to the Windows registry or create extra files on the hard disk without asking for your permission. The source code is also available in the downloaded package, which can be examined by programmers or those interested in coding.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't experienced any stability issues in our tests, since the utility didn't freeze, crash or indicate errors. It sent WOL packets swiftly while remaining light on system resources usage. On the other hand, Wake on LAN doesn't make room for configuration.
