With Free Simple Chess you can play against the computer. It does not play that strong a Chess game but it is free, a very small download and should run on Windows, Linux and Mac because it is written in Java.
The user can set the strength in seconds or in search depth and also chose whether the program shall use quiescence search or not and moves can be taken back and forth.System requirementsOS: WIin XP/Vista
