Roguelikes are designed to be as tough as possible on the players, especially since most of them feature permadeath and a couple of other nasty features. Hence, everything about them should theoretically turn players away, but in this case they have the opposite effect. Gamers enjoy tough video games, at least if the gameplay is enjoyable enough to be worth the effort.

Collect powerful items and fight tough enemies

Souls Rescue is a retro roguelike in which your goal is to explore the levels and take everything of value while making sure that your character stays alive throughout the ordeal. Not only that, but you also get to fight a variety of nasty monsters along the way, all of which have special attacks that can get you in a lot of trouble if you are not careful. There’s much more to the game than that, on the other hand.
As such, you start by choosing one of the multiple available characters, each one of which has certain stats and abilities. Granted, the differences between them might not be that observable at first, but it gets clearer and clearer the farther you go that the classes are quite different. It’s also worth mentioning that you can craft items and scrolls to help you along.

Pick up potions and use them to stay alive

One of the most interesting things about Souls Rescue is the fact that you can craft new items using reagents and ingredients you find throughout the dungeon. Hence, whether you need new spell scrolls or various other things, your character has the power to combine things in order to provide you with what you need. On the other hand, you need to be familiar with the system first, because it’s not as simple as it sounds.
As far as the graphics are concerned, you shouldn’t expect an awful lot in this regard, but that’s not to say the game looks bad. The retro vibe is quite pleasant, even if most of the environment is too dark most of the time, which makes it difficult to spot items. In addition, the game window cannot be resized, which is quite the bother, especially since there’s no fullscreen mode either.

A challenging game with a lot of potential

In the end, Souls Rescue needs more work in the gameplay department, but it’s definitely on the right track at the moment. Not just that, but the random dungeons have the power to keep you busy for quite a while.
