An apocalypse is definitely not the kind of event you want to witness, regardless of how prepared you think you are. Fear and loneliness catch up with everyone, and it’s certainly no fun to realize that the people who maintain the power plants or work in the factories that used to produce food are all dead. Hence, living in a non-apocalyptic world is that much more enjoyable.
A car ride with a stranger becomes a bit more
The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car is an interesting visual novel that allows you to see how people would change when almost everyone else on Earth has succumbed to the zombie plague. In essence, this is an interactive visual novel, but don’t expect too many choices, especially since the story is very short as well, at least if you are a fast reader.
You can choose whether to play with the guy or the girl in the beginning, and it’s also possible to choose their names. The story is seen through their eyes depending on whom you choose, although some routes tend to lead to the same ending, as it’s only natural. Depending on what you say or do, the plot takes one form or the other, which is always neat if you enjoy replaying games.
Nice artwork and great soundtrack
The dialog is one of the most important parts of the game, and it’s a good thing that it’s very well-written. Granted, it’s very short as well, but at least it makes sense and you can choose the desired responses regardless of what character you pick in the beginning. On top of that, the story as a whole is quite powerful, especially since it touches on heavy subjects such as suicide.
Lastly, the graphics are very important as well, and they are certainly great in this case. Even if the background is pretty much static, the colors are great, and there are some facial expressions in there as well to make the scenes feel more exciting. The soundtrack is great as well, although you don’t get a chance to listen to it for too long.
A nice experience for visual novel fans
In the end, The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car can easily keep you busy for an hour or so, especially if you want to see both routes and all the endings. Moreover, it actually features great writing, which is always nice in the genre.
