Deciding to keep your entire collection of music on your computer might give you a hard time identifying songs of interest, or even locations. As such, you can rely on specialized applications like AudioIndex in order to create a list of songs from a specific location, index them, and even generate browsable reports.

Scan a custom folder or removable drive

You start off in the main menu, which makes it clear from the beginning what tools you can use, and how these help you organize your music collection. Don’t worry though, files you scan and add to the list are not modified, but only indexed for quick identification. You can access the options menu to define behavior and order of indexing for more comfort.
Music files you want to index don’t necessarily have to be on your computer, and it’s also possible to scan a specific folder, or a removable storage device. The index is build pretty fast, and you need to save the new database. Note, however, that you might run into some minor issues if tags are not properly defined, and you can only work with MP3 files.

Build templates and create reports

Creating a list is based on the previous index. Filter options can be applied based on tags, with the possibility to set sort order in the options menu. With a list created, you can then easily identify items and apply more filters. You’re free to create multiple lists, which can come in handy for sorting songs according to tags.
There’s also a template generator which is used to define the type of report you want to build. Output can thus come in either TXT or HTML format to easily embed in your web projects, or even a FTP server. Multiple templates can be created, with the possibility to select the one of interest when building reports.

All things considered, we can state that AudioIndex is a practical application especially if you want to create a browsable list of songs on your computer. Although it can only work with MP3 files, it allows you to build different templates, and generate reports based on custom filters and file tags.
