Backup Thunderbird

Backup Thunderbird is a straightforward piece of software that gives you the possibility to create backups for Mozilla Thunderbird when it comes to email accounts, messages, RSS feeds, newsgroups and address book, in order to create BAK files.
Needless to say, you must have Thunderbird installed to be able to get this tool up and running. It automatically detects your installed copy of Thunderbird, along with all profiles and data, requesting you to exit the tool before creating a new backup.

Back up and restore Thunderbird information

In order to create a new backup file, you have to specify the saving directory and file name. It's also possible to apply password protection to encrypt the backup item and restrict the access of other PC users, but this is optional.
The tool also gives you the possibility to restore a backup from an existing file and set the correct password necessary for decryption. Just like in the previous step, you have to exit Thunderbird if it's currently running while keeping in mind that all current files and data will be overwritten and lost.
There are no other notable options provided by this piece of kit. For example, the tool doesn't give you the possibility to handpick the exact items you want to back up while excluding the rest, nor to extract the exact items to restore from the backup file, not to mention that it doesn't show a preview list with all objects to give you a better idea of what's actually backing up and restoring.

Evaluation and conclusion

The software application didn't put a strain on the computer's performance in our tests, running on a low amount of CPU and RAM. We haven't experienced any stability issues, as it didn't hang, crash or indicate errors.
Although it doesn't have richer options and customization preferences, Backup Thunderbird delivers a simple solution to help you back up and restore Thunderbird settings and profiles.
