Cluster Size Calculator Description
Cluster Size Calculator is able to scan files and folders to let you compare their efficiency by their data cluster size. It comes in handy when you intend to move files to a new drive, as it can help you use the cluster size information to your advantage to optimize disk space consumption.
Portable application with a simple GUI
This tool is wrapped in a portable package, so it doesn't need installation. You can save its executable file anywhere on the hard drive and just click it to launch the app. Another option is to keep it stored on a USB flash disk to directly run it on any computer with minimum effort and no previous installers. Plus, it doesn't make any changes to your Windows registry, unlike most installers.
As far as the interface is concerned, the tool adopts a classical-looking window that doesn't put emphasis on graphical elements, yet it's quite easy to navigate.
Scan a location to examine, copy and export cluster size information
After indicating a drive or directory, you can instruct Cluster Size Calculator to perform a scan, at the end of which it reveals the cluster size and count, wasted space in bytes, kilobytes and megabytes, file count, and average size.
All this information can be copied to the Clipboard or exported to a plain text document in tab-delimited CSV format. There are no other notable options available here.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't come across any unpleasant surprises throughout our evaluation as far as stability is concerned, thanks to the fact that the app didn't freeze, crash or prompt error messages. It left a small footprint on system resources, since it needed a low amount of CPU and RAM to work properly.
Although it doesn't contain richer options and configuration settings, Cluster Size Calculator offers a simple solution for determining the cluster size of a drive or directory.
