Disk Image Creation Utilities Description
Disk Image Creation Utilities is a small software application that helps you create blank disk image files. The program is able to generate blank Macintosh hard disk images for use with SoftMac 2000 or other Macintosh emulators. Additionally, you are given the freedom to create a blank Atari ST disk image file that can be used with Gemulator.
Portable running mode
The utility comes in a portable ZIP package which be deployed on your system without having to follow the steps of an installation process. You may simply run the EXE files, namely MAKEDSK.EXE and MAKEIMG.EXE.
It is important to mention that the tool doesn’t leave any entries in your Windows Registry so you don’t need administrator privileges in order to work with it. Plus, you may store it on any USB flash drives or other devices.
Command-line options
Disk Image Creation Utilities gives you the possibility to create a large zero-filled file on your hard with the MAKEDSK.EXE tool (integrated in the deployment package). The utility can be controlled from a command-line console.
Although command-line parameters may sound like rocket science for rookies, this application makes it easy when it comes to writing the commands as you only need to follow the built-in instructions.
You can provide the name of the disk image file and enter the disk image size in kilobytes (you need to allocate a minimum of 90kB).
What’s more, you can use the MAKEIMG.EXE tool in order to generate pre-formatted Macintosh hard disk and floppy disk images. The image files are formatted in HFS and include a blank root directory. Additionally, you can mount the images as HFX files with SoftMac 2000 or other Macintosh emulators.
Bottom line
All in all, Disk Image Creation Utilities provides an efficient software solution for helping you generate blank disk image files. On the downside, the tool hasn’t been updated for a while so it may cause compatibility issues on newer operating systems.
