DiskCheckup Description
Hard disk failures happen for a number of reasons, either due to mechanical issues or to misuse. However, keeping track of the hard drive’s attributes can help you take steps towards avoiding such problems.
DiskCheckup is a program that monitors the SMART attributes of the hard disk, logs their evolution and lets you know in advance if the drive could crash at any point in time.
The app comes with a clean interface that’s extremely easy to figure out. One of the disks connected to the computer can be chosen from the application window.
For instance, you can view information regarding the disk’s interface, capacity, serial and model number, firmware revision, number of partitions, standards compliance and feature support, just to name a few from a very long list.
As we have mentioned before, the SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) attributes are also monitored with the help of this program. Thus, you can find out details about the temperature, power cycle count, spin retry count and many other properties.
For all of these entries, you can view the status, the current and worst recorded values, the threshold level and the predicted date when the hard drive’s condition is expected to exceed this value.
DiskCheckup can also perform two types of tests in order to better evaluate the state of the hard drive. The short version shouldn’t take more than five minutes to complete, while the extended test requires over ten minutes.
Under the “SMART History†tab in the interface, you can view the values for all the logged attributes.
The configuration menu allows you to display the temperature in Celsius or Fahrenheit degrees, adjust the temperature warning level and choose an action to perform when the conditions exceed the TEC values determined by the manufacturer.
Additionally, you can have the app automatically refresh the information after a specific time interval, and have the app record SMART attributes for TEC computation.
The bottom line is that DiskCheckup is a program that can be useful when you want to keep an eye on your hard disk’s performance. Inexperienced users should find the tool easy to use, thanks to its intuitive layout.
