Dupy Scan

Dupy Scan is a lightweight and portable software tool designed to locate duplicate files on the disk and remove them to free up space. It comes in handy for sorting out large collections of photos, music or movies, for instance.

Portability advantages

Since installation is not required, you can drop the program files in any part of the hard disk and just click the executable to launch the app. There is also the possibility to save Dupy Scan to a USB flash disk or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any PC with minimum effort and no previous installers.
An important aspect worth taking into account is that the program does not create new entries in the Windows registry or Start menu, thus leaving no traces behind after its removal.

Plain interface with simple options

The GUI is classical, based on a regular window with a minimalistic layout, where you can import files or directories for scanning using either the file browser or drag-and-drop method. The list shows the name, directory, priority (primary or secondary), along with group for each file. Before starting the scanning procedure, you have to specify the primary files that Dupy Scan will use as the originals.

Examine the duplicates and change the comparison mode

When the scanner is done, you can select all items or only the first one in each group of duplicates, sort them by various criteria (e.g. type, hash, priority), as well as remove all unique files from the list to exclude them from the removal part.
What's more, you can customize the way Dupy Scan compares the files in regard to the directory, extension, creation time, attributes, name, size, last write time, hash (SHA-256), based name, type, last access time and binaries.

Evaluation and conclusion

Dupy Scan does not put a strain on computer performance, since it runs on low CPU and RAM. It has a good response time and finishes scan jobs rapidly, without hanging, crashing or popping up error messages. Although it is not as feature-rich and intuitive as other similar applications, Dupy Scan does a fairly good job at identifying and deleting duplicate files.
