English by Picture Description
English by Picture is a simple software solution that can help children learn English in a fun and interactive way. It bundles several games and activities that can be used for practicing and improving language skills.
As it is designed for children, ease of use is one of its main advantages. In addition, the application does not require installation, so it can be run from a removable drive, without worrying that the PC registry is affected in any way.
The main interface just comprises a few buttons that you can use to access different learning sections. The 'Dictionary' contains a collection of words in alphabetical order. Double-clicking on a word displays a picture of the described object, so that children can associate the image with the meaning.
The 'View picture' section is somewhat similar, as it displays all the words in the dictionary and their corresponding pictures, just like flashcards. Thus, the application is suitable even for younger children, who cannot yet write.
Children can play the 'Find miss letter' game, where they have to enter the missing letter before the time runs out. If they want to increase the difficulty level, they can choose to write the entire word (and not just a letter) that describes what they see in the picture. This helps them improve both the writing and spelling skills.
Another entertaining activity is where the child has to choose the right picture that corresponds to a given word (or viceversa). If they succeed, they receive a smiley face. Otherwise, a sad face is placed in the score sector.
Although it does not replace English tutoring or book, English by Picture surely makes learning more fun and encourages children to practice at home, on their own.
