File Date Description
File Date is a small-sized and portable utility that enables you to easily change the date of last modification for your files. It comes in handy if you're looking for a quick method to manipulate this file attribute to hide the fact that you changed the contents of sensitive items, for example.
Doesn't require setup
There is no installer file available, so you can copy the downloaded files to a custom drive on the local disk or to an external storage unit to directly launch File Date on any machine without any installation.
It doesn't need software frameworks or other components, nor does it update the system registry with new entries to increase the risk of Windows stability issues.
Drop files on the .exe by set the last modification date
Double-clicking the .exe brings up a message dialog which informs you that only one file is expected. To modify a file's date of last modification, it has to be dragged and dropped over the executable file.
A small box is brought up to the screen and grants you access to a built-in calendar (similar to the Windows calendar), where you can go the past and pick a new year, month and date.
After applying the modification with one click, the application exits. You can find out if it was successful by accessing the file's dialog of properties to view its date and time attributes.
How it works
Several aspects must be mentioned about this lightweight utility. It works with only one file at a time and doesn't have an option for integrating it into the Windows Explorer context menu to be able to quickly change the last written date by just opening the file's right-click menu and picking this entry.
However, the developer left some notes about how you can manually do it by resorting to Command Prompt. Furthermore, the time of last modification is not affected by the tool, so the original stamp is preserved. It's not possible to set dates in the future.
Conclusion
It may not have rich features, but File Date offers a straightforward solution for changing the date of last modification of files. The tool can be easily handled by all users.
