Free MKV Player

As the name of this software implies, Free MKV Player lets you easily play video tracks with the MKV format in a user-friendly environment.
The interface of the tool is based on a standard window in which you can open a MKV video by using the file browser only, since the "drag and drop" method is not supported.
In order to access any features, you will have to open the right-click menu. Here you can play and pause the clip, switch to full screen mode, as well as increase, decrease and mute the volume.
But you can also navigate back and forth within the video, increase or decrease the playback speed, set an audio and subtitle delay, change the subtitle position, disable Free MKV Player from keeping the aspect ratio, and more.
The simplistic program requires a low-to-moderate amount of system resources, supports several keyboard shortcuts, has a good response time and didn't freeze or crash during our tests.
However, the interface needs a complete makeover since it gets frustrating to open the context menu every time you want to perform an action. Also, there is no help file available and some important functions are missing (e.g. you cannot create a playlist).
Plus, there seems to be some compatibility issues with Windows 7 because the image of the video sometimes remains on the screen ever after swithcing to another tab. We recommend Free MKV Player with reservations.
