Host Name Changer Description
Host Name Changer is a lightweight and portable application that gives you the possibility to modify your computer's host name, which represents its identifier when connecting to the Internet and sending emails to interact with remote machines.
It doesn't include complicated options or configuration properties, so it can be handled by any types of users, since it doesn't require previous experience with networking utilities.
Portability advantages
The entire program's wrapped in a single executable file that can be saved to any part of the disk and just double-clicked to launch Host Name Changer. Another option is to keep it stored on a USB flash drive, in order to directly run it on any PC with minimum effort and without having to install something beforehand.
It doesn't need any DLLs to run, doesn't create extra files on the HDD without your permission, and doesn't change Windows registry settings. A simple file deletion is enough to remove it from the hard drive.
Easily change your host name
As far as the interface goes, the tool adopts a small window with a plain and simple structure, where you can click a button to find out the PC's current host name, type or paste the new name, and click a button to commit modifications. There aren't any other noteworthy options available.
Evaluation and conclusion
As we expected, it left a small footprint on computer performance in our tests, thanks to the fact that it required a low quantity of CPU and memory to work properly. However, although it didn't hang, crash or indicate errors, it didn't work on newer Windows models in our tests.
We must also take into account that it hasn't been updated for a long time and may have compatibility issues with later OS editions. Nevertheless, you can test Host Name Changer for yourself.
