ImageToIcon Description
ImageToIcon is a lightweight and straightforward piece of software with a pretty self-explanatory name - it allows you to create icons from image files.
Supported file formats
The tool supports multiple file types for the input, namely JPG, BMP, PNG and GIF. It can be seamlessly handled, even by inexperienced users.
The advantages of being portable
This is a portable application, so ImageToIcon does not come with an installation package. It means that you can save the utility on a removable device (like a USB flash drive), store it on any computer and directly run its executable file.
What's more important is that the Windows Registry is not updated with new entries and no files are left behind after program removal.
Minimalistic looks
The interface of the application is based on a very small window with a simplistic layout. The 'what you see is what you get' principle certainly applies to ImageToIcon, since there are no available features, aside from the ones visible in the main application window.
Conversion options
Loading an item can be done by using only the file browser, since the 'drag and drop' method is not supported. Unfortunately, you cannot transform multiple pictures into icons at the same time. So, all you have to do is establish the output directory and filename, in order to save the ICO file; its thumbnail can be viewed in the main frame.
Performance, results and final thought
All icons have a resolution of 32 x 32 pixels. Unfortunately, ImageToIcon does not provide any options for altering the icon size. The tool uses a moderate amount of CPU and system memory, has a good response time and quickly converts an image. We have not come across any issues during our tests; ImageToIcon did not freeze, crash or pop up error dialogs. Although the tool has limited features, it offers a pretty straightforward solution to creating icons. No recent updates have been made.
