Inst2Midi Description
Inst2Midi is a small software application developed specifically for helping you convert monophonic audio source straight to MIDI data. With the aid of Inst2Midi and a third-party scoring program you can make it possible to translate your voice, trumpet, violin, guitar, or any other instrument via microphone to a written score in real time.
Interacting with the GUI
The layout looks a bit outdated. However, the dedicated parameters are well organized in the main window, and you may also appeal to a help manual in case you need to find out more details about the configuration process.
Audio conversion tweaks
Inst2Midi gives you the possibility to choose an audio input source and MIDI output device. The tool is able to check all available MIDI output devices in your system and lets you configure the microphone input from the Mixer panel.
As soon as you press the ‘MIDI Out’ button, you may start singing. Plus, you are allowed to alter the input level in order to make sure the sound is not distorted.
Other notable configuration settings worth being mentioned enable you to work with predefined instruments, load files belonging to your instrument, as well as set up a custom instrument by selecting the right clef for your instrument, transposing the key, defining the compass (respectively the pitch range of your instrument), defining the quality of your instrument, and tweaking the built-in equalizer (its frequency range is automatically adjusting to your instruments’ compass).
What’s more, you are allowed to select the channel to which the selected device is transmitting, launch the Microsoft Audio Mixer to adjust your audio input source and volume, as well as show the instrument panel in the main window.
On the downside, Inst2Midi hasn’t been updated for a long time so it may cause compatibility issues on newer operating systems like Windows 8.1 or Windows 10. It does not eat up a lot of CPU and memory resources so the overall performance of the computer is not affected.
Final remarks
To sum things up, Inst2Midi comes bundled with several handy features that can be employed in the educational field for helping musicians check if their voice is in tune or fingers are placed correctly on instruments.
