Jac-Ping Description
Jac-Ping is a straightforward piece of software that gives you the possibility to check the connectivity strength between your local PC and a remote PC by sending ping commands.
It also lets you trace routes and log program activity to file. Although it may sound complicated to work with, it doesn't need extensive skills with networking tools.
Simple setup and interface
After a fast and uneventful setup operation, you are greeted by a user-friendly interface, which consists of a common-looking window. It doesn't put emphasis on appearance but it's rather easy to navigate.
Ping hosts or IP addressses and record logs
All you have to do is enter a host name or IP address, indicate the TTL and timeout (in milliseconds) and click a button to start pinging it. What's more, you can enable continuous ping mode and ask the program to keep track of statistics in a log file (.csv format). You can also specify the ping frequency (in seconds).
Look up hosts and run traceroute
It's possible to stop the ping any time during the continuous pinging, clear log data, look up a host name to find out all corresponding IP addresses, as well as perform a traceroute over a maximum of 32 hops to get the path to the remote host and discover transit delays of packets. There are no other notable options provided by this piece of kit.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't come across any stability issues in our tests, thanks to the fact that the app didn't hang, crash or display error messages. It carried out ping and traceroute tasks swiftly while remaining light on system resources consumption, so it didn't hamper the PC's performance.
To sum it up, Jac-Ping delivers a speedy and effective solution to executing ping and traceroute on a specific host. Too bad it doesn't implement options for pinging multiple hosts within a given range at the same time. Nevertheless, it gets the job done and it's free.
