JOCR

JOCR is a simple tool designed to capture images and use Optical Character Recognition technology in order to export the detected text. You can use this tool for extracting the text from any part of your desktop to a text file.
Without a doubt, the ability to copy and paste text is one of the most used functions on any computer and operating system. However, it does not have the ability to copy text from an image such as a banner or a scanned document.
In order to solve this issue, you can use an OCR software that can identify the characters and export them to a text file. The JOCR app intends to provide you with a simple, easy to use solution that can be deployed quickly.

The upside of a portable app

The application requires no installation, which means that the Windows registry is not going to be affected. Moreover, you can use it on the fly and take it anywhere with you, by simply copying the program files to a USB thumb drive.

Capture a region of the screen or a window

Its simple interface allows you to capture any image displayed on your desktop. In order to select the desired text you can grab only a part of the desktop or an active window. The image can be printed or stored on the Clipboard for later use.

Support for MODI

The text recognition uses the Microsoft Office Document Imaging (MODI) tool for identifying the characters and exporting the text. Unfortunately, this component is included in the Microsoft Office package which makes JOCR viable only for the Office users.
Moreover, MODI is only available in the 2003 and 2007 versions of the Microsoft Office package which further restricts its usage. Since the JOCR development is stopped, an alternative solution or additional features are unlikely to be added.

A last evaluation

If you have the Microsoft Office Document Imaging tool available on your Office installation, the JOCR program enables you to quickly capture the text from images. Otherwise, it is recommended to look for another solution.
