There’s a file inside Windows which has direct control over them, and Key LED Flash is the type of application to use in order to take control, mostly for some fun.

This means you can store it on a thumb drive in case you want to use it on other computers, without putting stability at risk, because it doesn’t modify registry entries to enable functionality.
The application offers a couple of operation modes, namely game and effects. You start off in the latter one, where you get acquainted with a set of controls which take over the keyboard LED lights. The interface displays the dedicated buttons with their own LED lights, but you can also view them on your keyboard.

Custom effects and game mode

While in effects mode, you have the possibility to control the light toggle speed of each button, as well as the overall speed. This allows you to create custom effects, but stopping the show resets everything to default values. There are also various presets you can try out, but you can’t save your own.
The game mode mostly challenges your memory. Using these three functions, you need to follow a pattern delivered by the computer, which gradually increases in difficulty. Note that the application doesn’t just turn on lights, but also affects the toggle state of functions, so character casing might be affected if an effect is left on while writing some text strings.
