Keyboard Indicator

Keyboard Indicator is a lightweight and portable piece of software whose sole purpose is to point out whether the Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock keys are activated. It comes in handy to users who do not have such indicators built into the keyboard.

Portability advantages

Since there is no setup pack involved, you can drop the program files in any part of the hard disk and just click the executable to launch the app. There is also the possibility to save Keyboard Indicator to a USB flash drive or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any PC with minimum effort and no previous installers.
What's more, it does not modify Windows registry settings or create extra tools on the disk, thus leaving no traces behind after its removal.

Accessibility via the system tray area

Once launched, Keyboard Indicator creates an icon in the taskbar notifications area for each key - Caps Lock, Num Lock and Scroll Lock. However, users should keep in mind that these icons appear only when the key is activated. Otherwise, there is no sign that Keyboard Indicator is working. There is nothing much to say about options, as the only thing possible through the app is changing the default theme.

Evaluation and conclusion

As expected from such a small software utility, it does not put a strain on computer performance, since it runs on low CPU and RAM. It is prompt when the keys are pressed. We have not come across any unpleasant surprises in our evaluation, as Keyboard Indicator did not hang, crash or pop up error messages.
It has not been updated for a long time, so we should take that into account. Although it is not the most resourceful application out there, Keyboard Indicator serves its purpose when it comes to system tray indicators for the supported keys, and can be easily used by anyone, even those with no previous experience in computer software.
