LocateOpener Description

With the variety of different applications you can install on a computer, more and more file types are found. Some can use the same type, with the possibility to create compatibility issues. This is where LocateOpener comes in handy, letting you analyze any file type and check whether or not you have a program that can open it.

Integrates in the system context menu

The setup process requires pretty little effort, and goes smooth, but there’s no post installation prompt to let you know it’s done, nor is there a shortcut created on your desktop. Don’t worry, it integrates itself quite differently in your system, and attaches itself as a context menu entry.
However, you aren’t going to find it by right-clicking just anywhere. As the name suggests, it needs to target anything but folders, and automatically starts to look for applications that might be able to run that specific format. However, the scan can take some time, depending on the complexity of the target format.

Far from being a pro

LocateOpener might not always retrieve the desired result, especially since it’s not fitted with a feature to look online for missing components or host applications. On the other hand, it does suggest to scan using a built-in component, namely TrID. Doing so brings up a prompt with various details you need to manually look up online.
What’s more, the application can’t be used to change association of files with different hosts. Even if a scan operation is successful, it’s still not able to make any changes, meaning it won’t open in that specific program, thus all the effort being on your behalf.

A few last words

Taking everything into consideration, we can safely state that LocateOpener comes with good intentions, and neatly integrates itself in the context menu to be visible only when needed. However, several functionality issues keep it from properly identifying target applications, and even if it does, the correct association is not automatically established.
