MatchFolders Description
MatchFolders is a software application designed to compare the contents of any two specified directories from the computer. It gives you a helping hand whenever you want to clean up your hard disk by finding and removing duplicate files, for example.
Old, yet functional tool
By the look of the fullscreen installer with the solid background color that takes us back to classical Windows, it's evident that the program hasn't received updates for a long time. However, the setup kit takes minimal time and effort, requiring little user attention.
Dual-pane window for comparing folder contents
The interface is practical, thanks to the dual-pane window that enables you to seamlessly explore two different directories on the disk, in order to compare file contents.
You can check out the name, size, format and date of last modification for each file, launch, cut, copy, paste and delete files, as well as view file properties (same as in Windows Explorer).
Moreover, you can change the source and destination in the two panes or swap them, ask the tool to load icons from files in folders, as well as filter files by extension and attributes (archive, read only, hidden, system).
Evaluation and observations
Although the utility hasn't been updated for a very long time, we haven't experienced any stability issues in our tests. It remained stable throughout its runtime, without hanging, crashing or displaying errors.
On the other hand, we expected richer features from a folder comparison application. For instance, MatchFolders doesn't highlight different files or matches in the two panes, in order to help you spot them easier.
Conclusion
To sum it up, MatchFolders provides you with a simple method for comparing the contents of any two folders and it's intuitive enough to be tackled even by inexperienced users, but it doesn't bring anything new to the table.
