MBOX Converter

With the help of MBOX Converter you can easily convert .mbox message files to .mdir format (MailDir), which is compatible with the MailEnable email client.

About .mdir format

The MailDir email extension stores each message extracted from the .mbox container in a separate file and assigns unique file names, keeping them stored in different directories. This way, the contents are easier to handle.

No installation required

There is no setup kit involved, which makes the program portable. It's packed in a single .exe file that can be saved anywhere on the disk or copied to a removable storage unit to run MBOX Converter on any computer directly, without previous setup.
It doesn't add new entries to your system registry, create files on the disk without asking for permission, or need DLLs or other components to work properly. In order to delete it, all you have to do is delete the .exe.

Straightforward interface and options

The GUI is simple, represented by a single small window with an unpolished design, showing all options put at your disposal.
There are no buttons integrated for indicating the .mbox input file or .mdir saving directory, and the drag-and-drop method is unsupported.
Instead, it's necessary to type or paste the full paths of the input file and output folder in the dedicated boxes. Make sure to get the syntax right, otherwise the tool displays errors and prevents you from carrying out conversion tasks.

Evaluation and conclusion

Unsurprisingly, it didn't put a strain on the computer's performance in our tests. However, MBOX Converter looks like an unfinished project with insufficient graphical elements to make it user-friendly (e.g. buttons for indicating the input file and output directory).
On top of that, it has a limited set of features. For example, it cannot convert multiple files at the same time. Nevertheless, you can test it for yourself, since it's free.
