MergeDir Description
Removable storage devices are now a common, useful gadget, especially since they can store great amounts of data. Although it might seem like a trivial task to copy content of a folder to another one, the process can be accomplished a lot faster if you rely on specialized applications like MergeDir.
Simple design and portability perks
The application is not specifically designed for USB flash drives, but it does not require installation to properly function, so it can be carried around on such a portable drive. This also means that the computer you use it on remains clean, because no registries are added to the default system to cause any damage.
On launch, a compact main window shows up, with a couple of fields that require your attention, as well as a few related details. There’s a log field that updates once the merger is complete, and you’re even asked whether or not to store the log in the source directory as a plain text file.
Leaves more to be desired
After a short while checking out the set of features, you might be tempted to believe that MergeDir is a sync utility. It can be given that role, but the way it does this is a bit too shallow. In other words, it can only move all files from one directory to the other, and it can’t even create the source directory, so you need to make sure it’s a valid one.
In case you didn’t pay attention to the source and destination fields, you can easily swap them at the press of a button. Unfortunately, the application is only able to perform a one way operation, without the possibility to at least copy, and not move the entire content of the source directory.
To end with
Taking everything into consideration, we can say that MergeDir comes with good intentions, but doesn’t manage to bring anything new on the market. It’s role as a folder sync utility is highly questionable due to the lack of more manipulation methods, scheduler, or even option to automatically create the destination folder.
