Microsoft DiskPart Description

Microsoft DiskPart replaces the now ancient ‘fdisk’ utility utilized in MS-DOS based Windows operating systems such as 95, 98 or Millenium. It was firstly introduced in Windows 2000 as a more powerful alternative to the disk management utility. The main difference between these two is the fact that Microsoft DiskPart provides explicit access to disk volumes.
With the help of Microsoft DiskPart, you are able to manage disks, partitions or volumes in just a jiffy, using scripts or by means of a command prompt. Listing and selecting the object to use is required prior to performing various operations such as creating, deleting of setting partitions as active.
As soon as you select the object, you can use the ‘detail’ command to view information regarding the currently selected disk, partition or volume. You can also quickly and easily ‘assign’ letters to your partitions, ‘create’ primary, extended as well as logical partitions, ‘extend’ them or choose to ‘remove’ them.
Moreover, the ‘create volume stripe / raid’ command can be performed alongside other operations such as ‘import’, ‘online’ or ‘retain’. In addition, you can utilize the ‘convert’ command for setting the partitioning style to MBR or GPT or to turn the selected disk into a dynamic / basic one.
The bottomline is that Microsoft DiskPart comes packing a really comprehensive set of tools to efficiently manage your disks, partitions and volumes. Although it is included in the Windows operating systems since XP, inexperienced users may look for an easier-to-use, GUI-enabled application for their tasks rather than using Microsoft DiskPart.
