mkv2vob

mkv2vob is a reliable video processing utility, which, as its name suggests, converts MKV files to VOB format, playable on Sony PS3 devices.

Installation and GUI

The installation process is standard – efforts involve pressing a few next buttons. Getting acquainted with the user interface is not difficult at all, since it’s compact and user-friendly.

Multi-tabbed layout

Three main panels populate the main window – one for processing one file at a time, one for converting an entire folder and one for configuration. When adding a whole directory, there are a few additional options: you can ignore sample files or the already converted files (if any) and you have the possibility to scan subdirectories.

Configuration settings

The most important part of the software is the Configuration section. All kinds of settings are present here, but a certain level of computer knowledge is required in order to handle the options offered by the application.
You can choose the preferred audio and subtitle language, the transcoding codec (MPEG-2, XviD and X264 – the first one is the fastest, while the last one is the slowest) and the output type (file or AVCHD to USB and disc). Other options include subtitle encoding, overscan compensation, loading subtitles from a file and several others.

Performance

During our tests, mkv2vob performed quite well and with low resource consumption. It’s fast enough (this depends on the transcoding codec you chose) and the output quality is decent.

In conclusion, this application fulfills its purpose and makes no compromise on quality. However, advanced users are more likely to understand it faster.
