PhyxCalc Description

Mathematics is an extremely complicated subject that sometimes requires advanced tools, such as a calculator to perform specific functions. PhyxCalc is an application that provides a calculator for users, with access to built-in functions, advanced symbols and a data plotter.

A simplistic interface that can be easily improved due to a customizable layout

While PhyxCalc works in the sense that users can enter numbers and perform basic calculations, the layout is far from ideal, as well as the choice of displayed features. Most of the additional content that raises it above the standard Windows Accessories Calculator is hidden away in different menus, rather than being displayed openly.
Fortunately, the application is highly customizable and additional content can be dragged into the main window and becomes a fixed addition. The changeable layout is definitely an improvement, yet some of the extra features should be there as standard with the option to remove them, rather than add them. The developers run the risk of users not even realizing PhyxCalc can be customized, and giving up on the program without realizing what it can do.

An interesting array of advanced features, that are sadly not well explained and difficult to use

The main aspect of PhyxCalc is that it is more advanced than a standard computer calculator, since it includes data plotting, logarithm support and other more advanced functions. Unfortunately, using them is not natural or intuitive, nor is the help documentation especially useful and detailed. The functions do work, but those unfamiliar with them will have no chance in setting them up.
A few simple improvements would make a big difference to PhyxCalc, providing it with a more robust feel and showing off what it can do rather than hiding it. Firstly the layout should include more, not less, the symbols and several of the advanced features should have their own button or already be displayed on the main window.
Secondly, the data plotter needs a built in guide or tutorial, perhaps in the form of popups or even a few alert messages. There are also minor tweaks to the interface that would be useful, such as a button to wipe the calculator screen of all previous calculations, and, the ability to use the result of one calculation automatically, in the next line.

An advanced calculator that hides its advantages rather than showing them off

PhyxCalc is certainly a useful calculator application, yet the minimalistic approach to presentation makes it look far more simplistic than it is. Many users will not be aware or even understand how to use all its features, meaning that it really only suits those already experienced with advanced mathematics. A more user friendly interface would make it more accessible to students, who are still learning and grappling with the concepts.
