Made as the portable counterpart of Genre Playlist Builder, Portable Genre Playlist Builder is a tiny application that gives you the possibility to quickly put together M3U playlists by taking into account song genre. It features approachable options that can be tackled with ease by anyone.

Prerequisites and interface

It's not wrapped in a setup pack, so you can drop the downloaded files in a custom directory on the HDD or on a USB flash disk, and just double-click the .exe to launch the tool on any machine effortlessly. It doesn't add new entries to the Windows registry or create any files on the disk without asking for your permission. However, you must have .NET Framework installed.

Index folders and filter genre to create playlists

You can get started by specifying a folder you want to scan for MP3 audio tracks. After indexing the directory, the utility lets you know how many songs were indexed and how many were ignored due to inexistent genre information.
It memorizes the music tracks that can be used for creating M3U playlists and enables you to filter them by the following genre: blues, classical, industrial, jazz, or other. In the next step, all you have to do is indicate the saving folder and filename of the new M3U playlist.

Evaluation and conclusion

It worked smoothly in our tests, without causing the OS to hang, crash or prompt errors. Playlists were created fast while the app remained light on system resources consumption.
On the other hand, it doesn't leave too much room for customization. For example, it doesn't implement options for adding custom genre, which means that you can create playlists using only the provided presets. Nevertheless, you can test Portable Genre Playlist Builder for yourself.
