Portable MZooM

Portable MZooM is a small-sized software application that you can use to easily create fractals and make them ready for 3D viewing. It supports Mandelbrot, Julia and Newton fractals in 8-bit or 24-bit color depth. As the name implies, the tool doesn't require setup.

Portability advantages

You can drop the program files in any part of the hard drive and just click the executable to launch Portable MZooM. Another option is to keep it stored on a USB flash drive, in order to directly run it on any PC with minimum effort and no previous installers. Moreover, it doesn't modify Windows registry settings.

Generate Mandelbrot, Julia or Newton fractals

The GUI is user-friendly, consisting of a classical-looking window with a simple structure, where you can start a new project by defining fractal variables, such as the fractal type, algorithm, maximum iterations, escape level, and periodicity checking.
In addition, you can configure parameters for the image (size, depth), variables (e.g. X and Y center, calculation step, absolute and relative scale), dimensions, and others (e.g. distance algorithm, perturbation of Z). Variable properties can be edited anytime.

Configure fractal settings and export the project

It's possible to personalize boundary colors, create new fractal centers, erase fractals, place markers, draw in 2D or 3D, rotate the color palette, convert 8-bit to 24-bit color depth or vice versa, find iterations, as well as to apply filters (e.g. edges, emboss), among others.
The fractal can be saved as a project file and later resumed, printed, as well as exported as an image file with the TIFF, GIF or JPEG format.

Evaluation and conclusion

We haven't found any issues in our tests, thanks to the fact that the utility didn't freeze, crash or prompt error dialogs. It used low CPU and RAM, so it didn't hamper system performance.
All in all, Portable MZooM comes equipped with a bunch of useful advanced settings for helping you generate different types of fractals, and it's free to use.
