S-soft Textpad

S-soft Textpad is a lightweight and portable text editor similar to Windows Notepad, which facilitates a simple working environment and basic word processing features for users looking for a minimalistic and speedy application to open, edit and save TXT files.

Minimal interface with standard text options

The interface is user-friendly. It's represented by one window with a barren appearance, whose menu bar contains file, editing, formatting, and viewing operations.
There is no spellchecker available. On the other hand, you can cut, copy, paste and delete text, insert copyright, registered, trademark or other special characters by code, find and replace text, as well as insert the system date and time.
It's also possible to wrap words to fit the window, configure basic font settings (name, style, size, effects, color, script), as well as display a status bar with the character's current position, selection and length.

Doesn't need installation

S-soft Textpad is packed into just one .exe file that can be saved anyplace on the hard drive or stored on a USB flash disk to run it on any PC with little effort and without setup.
It doesn't need DLLs or other components to work properly, update the registry with new entries, or generate new files and folders without letting you know about it. In order to uninstall it, you just have to delete its executable.
The source code is also available in the downloaded package for Delphi programmers or those just interested in coding using this language, since the app is free and open source.

Evaluation and conclusion

Taking into account its clear-cut interface and straightforward options, S-soft Textpad should meet the requirements of many users looking for a Notepad replacement, as long as they keep in mind that it doesn't have advanced text editing features. It used a small amount of CPU and RAM in our tests.
