SearchIt

SearchIt is a tiny and portable piece of kit that enables you to seamlessly conduct file searches across your computer. It comes equipped with just a couple of intuitive options that can be figured out even by inexperienced users.

Portability perks

Since there is no setup pack involved, you can drop the program files in any part of the disk and just click the .exe to launch SearchIt. Another possibility is to save it to a USB flash drive to be able to directly run it on any computer with minimum effort and no previous installers. Moreover, it doesn't modify the Windows registry configuration.

Plain and simple interface

The GUI is made from a single window with a straightforward structure that doesn't put emphasis on appearance. In fact, the rudimentary look makes SearchIt look like an unfinished project.

Search for file names or content

In order to conduct a search operation, all you have to you is specify the target, whether it's a drive or directory, enter the keyword, and ask the tool to match it against the file name or content.
Subfolders may be included or excluded from the scan scope. Search results reveal the file name and full path of each match. There are no other notable options available.

Evaluation and conclusion

The software utility didn't put a strain on the overall performance of the machine, thanks to the fact that it needed low CPU and RAM. It didn't hang, crash or prompt error messages.
However, it's a very old product that hasn't been updated for a long time, and it has compatibility issues with newer Windows editions. During our tests, it failed to return any search results. On top of that, it contains only basic options and doesn't reserve any advanced settings for experienced users.
