TreeView Description
TreeView is a straightforward tool that displays content for NEXUS, PHYLIP, Hennig86, Clustal and other files with a tree format. It contains a few basic settings that can be adjusted by anyone with minimal experience in such utilities.
The installation procedure is not complicated at all, since there are just standard options available. The interface is not particularly attractive; it actually looks like something pulled out of an old operating system. However, it's simple to get around.
Tree-formatted files can be opened using either the file browser or drag-and-drop support. TreeView enables the import of a list with taxon names to create a star tree, search the TreeBASE online, edit the tree description, as well as draw the tree unrooted, as a slanted or rectangular cladogram, or phylogram.
It is also possible to show internal edge labels, choose the tree to be displayed, set the order for drawn nodes, define outgroups, root trees with outgroups, and print multiple trees on multiple pages.
As far as style is concerned, the window font can be set to plain, bold or italic, and you can change the font type and size. Undoing and redoing actions is possible. The tree style can be selected from the "Preferences" panel as well, along with the tree order (default, ladderize left or right) and font properties. The project can be saved to an existing or new file, as well as exported to an image.
TreeView does not put a strain on computer performance, as it uses a pretty low quantity of CPU and RAM. It has a good response time and works well, without causing the OS to hang or crash. Unfortunately, TreeView has not been updated for a while and needs further improvements concerning the interface and others aspects.
