Caps Lock

Caps Lock is a small-sized and practical tool that notifies you whenever the Caps Lock button is activated from the keyboard. It does this by showing an icon in the systray and optionally playing audio alerts.
The program doesn't contain complicated options or configuration parameters, and it can be used by anyone with ease. It can also be instructed to monitor NumKey.

Simple setup and systray integration

Setting it up is a fast task that shouldn't impose any difficulties since the installation kit doesn't include special options. Once launched, Caps Lock creates an icon in the taskbar notifications area, which indicates the current status of the Caps Look function: a green tick for active, or a red x for inactive.

Set audio alerts for CapsLock and NumLock presses

By uncovering the tray icon's right-click menu, you can access the small configuration panel to tinker with settings. It's possible to include or exclude the CapsLock and NumLock keys, as well as to activate audio alerts and specify the number of characters to type when either CapLock or NumLock is enabled before starting to beep. These settings can be remembered on exit. Otherwise, the application returns to the default configuration at the next launch.

Evaluation and conclusion

As we expected from this compact software tool, Caps Lock didn't hog system resources in our case, running on a low amount of CPU and memory. It was responsive to CapsLock and NumLock actions and remained stable throughout its runtime, without hanging, crashing or showing errors.
All in all, Caps Lock may not have a particularly rich set of features, but it offers a quick solution for verifying the status of CapsLock and NumLock keys via visual and audio means. It's geared toward all types of users whose keyboard is faulty or unequipped with status lights.
