Checksum Tool for MD5 Description
Checksum Tool for MD5 is an easy-to-use application that gives you the possibility to calculate the MD5 hash of any file, regardless of its extension.
The resulted alphanumerical value can be used to verify file integrity, which comes in handy when preparing to download large-sized items, for instance.
No setup required, besides Java
Since it was developed in Java, you must have this runtime installed. However, the app isn't wrapped in a setup package. Instead, you can drop the downloaded executable .jar file in a preferred location on the disk or copy it to a USB flash drive to directly run Checksum Tool for MD5 on any PC with Java. It doesn't modify your system registry settings or create files on the disk without permission.
Simple GUI for MD5 checksums
It's packed in a simple interface, represented by a normal window with a plain appearance and well-structured layout, where you can use the file browser to locate and select a file.
The application automatically calculates and displays its MD5 checksum. Although it doesn't implement buttons for copying data to the Clipboard, exporting it to file, or printing it, you can select text and copy it by triggering the global keyboard shortcut.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't come across any unpleasant surprises in our tests as far as stability is concerned, thanks to the fact that the software program didn't hang, crash or indicate errors. It left a small footprint on system performance, needing a low amount of CPU and RAM to function normally.
On the other hand, Checksum Tool for MD5 has a light set of options. For example, it doesn't support batch processing, so you can calculate the MD5 signature of only one file at a time. We must also keep in mind that it hasn't received updates for a while.
