DELNEXT

It sometimes happens that a file cannot be deleted because it is used by the system, an application or a service, and only a computer restart does the trick and restores your deletion rights back. However, to avoid rebooting or forgetting to erase the file next time the computer starts, you can opt for a simple app that goes by the name of DELNEXT.

Command line only, no GUI available

DELNEXT is a short name for 'Delete At Next Reboot', a console-only software solution with a small footprint that requires no installation. It can only be started via the command prompt, so if you are somewhat familiar with the console, you should have no problems using it.
The usage pattern is displayed, alongside the available instructions DELNEXT supports. No actual example is shown, but it shouldn't be difficult to get acquainted with the app, as the commands are very simple.

Erase files at the next reboot or on the spot, if possible

DELNEXT can schedule the deletion of one or more files of your choice at the next restart. Alternatively, you can also use the '/now' command to wipe a file on the spot.
In the first case, Windows will erase the file before loading any services, drivers, and apps, which means DELNEXT might be of use if you want to get rid of some infected files that refuse deletion. On the downside, DELNEXT is not capable of scheduling deletion for files that are located on a network shared folder.
You can specify the default location of the files you want to delete (empty directories are accepted; the entire folder is deleted if empty), as well as use wildcards to define one or more file types.
DELNEXT also enables you to specify a file to replace the one you want to erase. In other words, you can instruct it to remove a file and replace it with another.

A console file wiping utility

Although not having a regular GUI might be a drawback for some, more advanced users might appreciate the simplicity of a command line app, especially since all the commands are explained in detail. DELNEXT does its job as it should, it deletes the target files (or empty folders) and can even go to directories to search for content. Overall, it is a handy app for permanently getting rid if files that cannot be deleted during the current computer session.
