Extract Text Description
Extract Text is a small software application whose purpose is to help you extract text strings (or other types of strings) from binary files. It can be used for identifying messages in program files, looking for copyright notices inside items, or extracting the words from a long dictionary file. It can be installed on all Windows versions out there.
User interface
The tool reveals a clean and simple working environment. Documents can be imported in the main window using the built-in browse button (the drag-and-drop support is not implemented).
A help manual can be accessed in case you have any questions regarding the program’s configuration parameters. The utility can also be controlled via the command-line console, provided that you are familiar with inputting parameters in the CMD environment.
Text extraction options
Extract Text is able to automatically extract the text strings from a user-defined file and save the results to a plain text file to a custom location on your computer. The results of the text extraction process are also displayed in the main window, and you can copy them to the clipboard.
What’s more, you are allowed to print the list with results, undo your actions, make use of preset hotkey for faster actions, select all text data with a single click, perform clipboard-related actions (cut, copy, paste, delete), find text, as well as look for and replace text info.
A few configuration settings are hidden under the hood for helping you customize the text extraction process. You are offered the possibility to specify the minimum and maximum character number and include lowercase and uppercase characters, numbers, space, symbols, punctuation marks, other letters, as well as user-defined characters.
Tests have pointed out that Extract Text carries out a task very quickly and without errors. It is not a resource hog so you do not have to worry that it affects the overall performance of the computer. The output files may contain other strings beside text ones so they may embed useless items.
Final observations
All in all, Extract Text has to offer nothing more than a simplistic approach for helping you extract text strings from binary files, and is suitable especially for rookies.
