Graphics Capability Browser Description
Hardware components dictate the functionality of your machine, but it’s also up to drivers to gather and deliver the proper info sets. Windows provides a general list of computer specs to analyze, but there are different specialized applications like Graphics Capability Browser which can also create detailed reports.
Lightweight and easy to use
First of all, the application is ready for operation as soon as it lands on your computer, saving you the time and effort required to go through a setup process. This means that it can easily be carried around on a thumb drive to read info on other PCs as well, without affecting stability because registry entries are not altered in the process.
Running the application almost instantly brings up the window with all relevant details regarding your PC. Although the view space is pretty tight, a report is automatically created in the source folder under a plain text file. Details are grouped according to components, shown in an expandable tree list.
Details automatically saved to file
Unfortunately, the application hasn’t received any updates in quite some time, with a main requirement for functionality being DirectX 9, but modern Windows iterations come with updated editions of DirectX so there’s no problem of running into any compatibility issues. Moreover, the scan process isn’t really affected by the lack of updates, and relevant info is shown anyway.
General info fields refer to CPU, DirectX info, but only up to version 9, OpenGL, Memory, and general Windows details. As mentioned, a report is generated, bundling all details, which can count as quite a lot, and there’s no option to select which details to export.
A few last words
All things considered, we can state that Graphics Capability Browser might be a little outdated, but it can surely provide at least the surface details you’re looking for. It comes in a lightweight package which requires no installation, and a report is created containing all details, so a one-time run is enough.
