PIR

PIR is a feather-light and portable software application that you can use to seamlessly create lists with files and folders. It lets you set up many kinds of rules.

Portable application with a clear-cut GUI

Since PIR is wrapped in a portable package, you can drop the executable file in any part of the hard disk or on a removable storage unit, in order to directly launch it on any computer with minimum effort and no previous installers. Plus, it doesn't modify Windows registry settings.
The interface is user-friendly and consists of a large window with a classical appearance, which is divided into three tabs, dedicated to general options, the list, and the tree.

Customize options for listing files and folders

You can specify the full path to the directory whose files and subfolders you want to compile in the list, instruct PIR to create either a list, tree, or both, as well as sort items by name, file extension, format, size, date, CRC32, MD5 hash, or path (in ascending or descending order).
It's possible to filter all directory contents by file or extension, limit the scan depth, include any hidden files and folders, strip all formatting attributes, display the size in bytes, as well as to transform the file and folder names (e.g. convert to uppercase or lowercase, capitalization, mixed style).

Preview the listing and save it to file

PIR also enables you to customize basic font options, associate the program with Windows Explorer folders, and select the type of attributes to display, such as CRC32, MD5, or date of creation and last modification.
Once the list is generated, you can check it out in a built-in viewer, print all information, or save it to file with the RTF, TXT or CSV format.

Evaluation and conclusion

No error dialogs popped up in our tests, and the software utility didn't hang or crash. It had minimal impact on computer performance, running on low CPU and RAM.
Taking into account its approachable and advanced options, PIR should come in handy to many users looking to create lists with files and folders from their computer.
