Sesame Portable Description
Made as the portable twin of Sesame, this is a rather straightforward utility that you can use to protect your sensitive files with password encryption. It features several intuitive options and configuration parameters that even less experienced users can play with.
Portability perks
Since installation is not required, you can save the program files anywhere on the HDD and just click the .EXE to launch Sesame. Otherwise, you can move it to a pen drive or other removable storage unit to directly run in on any other machine and encrypt files. It doesn't change the Windows registry configuration.
The interface is clearly outdated, as we can tell by judging the quality of the graphical elements. The viewing mode can be toggled between tree and report mode.
Encrypt and decrypt files easily
You can navigate to a location on the disk from a drop-down list and select the files you want to protect, as well as specify and confirm the password required for decrypting them.
Furthermore, it's possible to create a new file, folder, Word document or text file, access recently visited paths, copy, paste and rename files, hide the file lock status, as well as disable warnings about files left unencrypted. By default, Sesame runs at every Windows startup until told otherwise. Plus, you can make it start hidden.
Evaluation and conclusion
We haven't come across any stability issues in our tests, thanks to the fact that Sesame didn't hang, crash or prompt error dialogs. It had a good response time and minimal impact on computer performance, thanks to the fact that it needed low CPU and RAM to work properly. Unfortunately, it has a lot of work to do when it comes to its GUI. Nevertheless, you can test it for yourself.
