SoundEngine is a feather-light and portable sound editor that comes loaded with features for beginners and experienced users alike. It lets you record your voice and create podcasts.

Portability advantages

Since installation is not required, you can drop the program files anywhere on the disk and just click the executable to launch SoundEngine. Otherwise, you can save it to a pen drive to directly run it on any PC with minimum effort. Unlike most installers, it doesn't modify Windows registry settings.

Easy and advanced mode

At the first startup, SoundEngine asks you to select the easy or advanced mode for the interface, depending on your skill level. While the easy mode contains basic options for playing and recording sound, the advanced one adds editing features and support for scripts, command lines, pitch, adjustment, analysis, and performance.

Audio adjustments, effects, recordings, and scripts

The utility supports .wav, .cda, .ogg and .csv files. It lets you adjust the speed, position and volume level while playing tracks, select the play device, frequency, bit rate and channel mode, zoom in and out of the waveform, as well as make a selection to trim or reverse.
Plus, you can insert silence, fade, reverb or delay, as well as adjust the pitch (semitone, cent, size, window, expand, volume), feel, low cut, add air, lag, surround and volume. There are multiple parameters you can analyze, such as the peak or distortion rate.
Voice recording is a simple task that shouldn't impose any difficulties. In addition to the aforementioned options, you can also enable a timer. The app lets you modify the default working, recording and setup folders, or load and execute scripts and command-line parameters.

Evaluation and conclusion

We haven't come across any stability issues in our tests, thanks to the fact that the tool didn't hang, crash or display error messages. It had a good response time and minimal impact on computer performance, using low CPU and RAM.
All in all, SoundEngine comes equipped with standard and advanced settings alike for all types of users looking for an all-round sound editing application. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated for a long time.
