Windows Product Key Retriever is a small-sized and portable software utility whose purpose can be pretty much deducted from its name: it recovers lost or forgotten Windows serial numbers.
The app does not integrate complex options or configuration settings, making it ideal for inexperienced users who just want to get back their OS key to reinstall it, for instance.
Since there is no setup pack involved, you can extract the program files to any part of the hard drive and just click the executable to run.
There is also the possibility of saving Windows Product Key Retriever to a USB flash disk or other external device, to be able to run it on any PC to find out its OS key on the spot, without previously installing anything.
The advantage of portable apps is that they usually do not create new entries in the Windows registry, Start menu or any other part of the HDD, leaving no traces behind upon their removal.
The interface is modern and highly intuitive, with the main frame having an Aero glass effect. The "what you see is what you get" principle certainly applies to Windows Product Key Retriever, since there are no other options available, apart from the ones shown in the primary window.
The Windows product key is immediately listed at initialization. Although you cannot copy it to the Clipboard, it is possible to save it to a plain text document as well as to print it. There are no other notable options provided by the app.
CPU and RAM usage is low. We have not come across any problems in our tests, since the tool did not freeze, crash or pop up error dialogs. All in all, Windows Product Key Retriever serves its purpose.
