Lalim Compact Player is a tiny and portable media player that offers support for AVI, MP3, VCD and DVD files. It features basic media controls for inexperienced users and those looking for a straightforward tool without complicated options.

Portable tool runs in the systray

The application's not wrapped in a setup package, so you can copy its files to a custom location on the disk or to a USB flash drive to be able to launch it on any computer directly. It doesn't need DLLs to run, add new entries to the system registry, or create files on the HDD without asking for permission.
At startup, Lalim Compact Player creates an icon in the system tray area and gets minimized there to become minimally invasive and let you carry on with your typical desktop activity while facilitating quick access to its options at the same time.

Rudimentary interface with basic media controls

The media player has an unpolished look and it's obvious that the product hasn't been updated for a long time. It has a built-in file explorer for locating and opening media files, but it's a bit inconvenient to use for navigation. On the other hand, it can be asked to play all files from a specified folder.
Standard media controls give you the possibility to pause and resume playback, enter full screen mode, play the previous or next track in the directory, seek a position by moving a slider, as well as adjust the volume level and audio panning. Moreover, the utility can be asked to automatically detect media from optical drives.

Evaluation and conclusion

Although it hasn't been updated for a long time, we haven't experienced compatibility issues on newer Windows models in our tests. System resources usage was low.
Overall, Lalim Compact Player doesn't look impressive but it features simple and practical options for playing and controlling AVI, MP3, VCD and DVD movie files.
