RS232 Sniffer is a lightweight and portable software application that helps users sniff communication ports in a simple and easy-to-use working environment.
Since installation is not a prerequisite, you can drop the executable file somewhere on the hard disk and just click it to run.
It is also possible to save RS232 Sniffer to a USB flash drive or similar storage unit, in order to run it on any workstation without previous installers.
An important aspect to take into consideration is that the Windows registry does not get updated with new entries, and files are not left behind on the HDD after removing the utility.
Once initialized, RS232 Sniffer creates an icon in the system tray area that you can double-click to bring up the main application window.
So, all you have to do is select the port, baud rate, data bit, parity, stop bit, and timeout of the virtual and physical ports, and click a button to open them. In addition, you can ask RS232 Sniffer to create a log file to further evaluate statistics. There are no other notable options available here.
We have noticed a minimal consumption of CPU and RAM during the app's runtime. It has a good response time and works well, without causing the operating system to hang, crash or pop up error dialogs.
However, RS232 Sniffer has not been updated for a while, and it may not work properly on later operating systems. Other than that, it should satisfy all users, thanks to its intuitive layout and overall simplicity.
