DC Port Scanner Description
DC Port Scanner is a feather-light application designed to scan ports of any host in the local network by specifying the first three bytes and trailing dot of an IP address.
It can be used by computer experts, such as network administrators interested in analyzing security issues to determine and resolve system vulnerabilities.
Old, yet functional tool
Before proceeding, you should know that the progam hasn't received updates for a long time and has compatibility problems with the latest edition of Windows. We managed to get it working by running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP.
Doesn't need setup
There is no installation involved, since DC Port Scanner is portable. It means that you can drop the downloaded files to a custom directory on the hard drive or just copy them to a USB flash disk to effortlessly run the tool on any PC. No new entries are added to the Windows registry in this regard, as it happens with many installers.
Scan ports on other hosts in LAN
The interface is plain and simple, represented by a tiny window that shows three dialog boxes and a button. It's possible to specify the class C subnet, starting host and port, as well as to click a button to start the scanner.
The application automatically creates a plain text document with log details about the specified host, such as scan starting date and time. This file gets updated with new information, so you should make sure not to launch the program from a write-protected device.
Evaluation and conclusion
It used little memory and CPU in our tests, so it didn't hamper the computer's performance. No error notifications popped up, and it didn't freeze or crash, as DC Port Scanner stayed stable throughout its runtime and didn't affect other running apps. Too bad that it hasn't been updated for such a long time that it doesn't work properly on newer OS versions.
